A three-position changeover switch, also known as a three-position toggle switch, is an electrical switch that has three stable positions to control the flow of electrical current in a circuit. These switches are commonly used in various applications where you need to select between three different electrical paths or configurations. In the first position, the switch connects one set of terminals, allowing electrical current to flow through a specific circuit or load. This position is often referred to as the ON position. In the second position, the switch is in the middle or neutral position. It does not connect any of the terminals, which means it interrupts the electrical current flow and effectively turns the connected circuit or load off. This position is often referred to as the OFF position. In the third position, the switch connects a different set of terminals, allowing electrical current to flow through a different circuit or load than in Position 1. This is another ON position, but it typically controls a separate electrical path or configuration from Position 1. In electrical systems, they can be used as transfer switches to select between different power sources, such as switching between the main power supply and a backup generator.
